Brave people risk everything to bring the slaughter of the Dolphins in Taiji to the awareness of the world. Please help by watching the Sundance Film Festival Award Winner "The Cove". It is not easy to watch but we must. The Oceans are being depleted of all life. Japan must be stopped in their slaughter of whales and dolphins. They are buying other Countries in the IWC to remove the ban on whaling. They are slaughtering thousands of dolphins each year. Please blog about this. Put it on Twitter and Facebook. We as a group of humanitarians must work together to raise awareness of this inhumane act that continues. Go here to read all about what you can do to help.

Redding CA - Highway 299 Heading East to MacArthur CA - Beautiful Country!

Memories of Route 66 (a TV series....dating myself here...I can barely remember it) only we are on The 299 and heading East. Fall River Mills is a small town of charm and beauty about an hour and half from Redding on The 299. On the way to Alturas, one finds "The Hat Creek" and The Pit River. This river community has much to offer.

The Hat Creek is known for some of the best Fly Fishing in the Western US. Winds through our county and is available throughout the Eastern perimeter.

Further along we come to MacArthur, CA a farming valley with impressive views of Mount Shasta. The Mountain appears to be a "Heavenly Being" hanging over this blessed valley protecting and standing guard.

This farming community is protected and has the feeling of having been passed by. Everything is slower and more pleasant in MacArthur. Simpler times still exist here.

Ginger Gendron - Most Beloved Puppy and Friend!

Sharing our best friend with you here today. Her name is Ginger and she's the sweetest thing in our lives. She makes us laugh and she is so intelligent. Always bumping me for a back rub and telling me when it's time to quit working which is just about now. Want to do some shopping and cooking for the weekend. Making some pinto beans and cornbread for the weekend. Gonna be barbequing all weekend. Shrimp, chicken shish-ka-bobs and more. Fresh corn and grillin' veggies. Sorry, got off topic here.

This post is about my sweetie GiGi. She is David and my best friend. She goes with us for real estate and loves to know she's included. Late in the afternoon she starts visiting my office and David's office, letting us know it's time to quit work and be together. My office is at one end of the house and his at the other end. She goes back and forth until we give in and quit. How sweet is that! Ginger Gendron or GiGi as we call her!

Here she is telling David that she had fun in the water. She's got this uncanny ability to avoid the camera. I now have a high end camera that snaps real time rather than delayed. Should improve my photos of her. This is with the old camera.

Here she is playing in the water with her Daddy. Handsome they are!

Wow, look at this happy doggie! She loves the lake but doesn't swim. What water dog have you ever known that would not swim. We think we got her too early in life and so she does not have the normal doggie instincts!

GiGi the Real Estate doggie goes with us for all our listings on unqiue properties. We always turn those into day trips with photo shoots built in and and some fun for GiGi. There is always a hamburger in the plans somewhere along the way. She like Jack-in-the-Box best. Their plain hamburgers are big and she likes that! We get two and she's totally stoked!

And here she is as a puppy. She has had only the sweetest care. We love her so much and she is such a treasure to us both. We are a threesome! We love doggies and puppies in all shapes and sizes.

Redding CA - David Gendron and his Photo Art - Preparing for a Show!

David Gendron is a photo artist and has been evolving his work for about 10 years now. He started down in Soledad, CA with a used camera and a give-away pocket camera. It's been a rather wonderful journey for us both as he has evolved this art form.

If you would like to see more of his work, visit his photo art blog here. He is fortunate to attend a group that meets once a month here in Redding. These photographers come from all around our local area and are some of the most reknown photographers in Northern California. It has been such a delight for David to be part of this group. He has learned a lot and they have gotten use to him and the way he sees the world. He has good friends. He has recently had a huge breakthrough in his ability to print his work. The result is that the print is as vivid as the the art on the screen. I believe he's been waiting for this breakthrough and now will be excited about putting a show together. Redding CA - The Cascade Theatre - Cultural Center for the Arts in Shasta County CA!

The Cascade Theatre is the center of the Cultural heart of Redding and Shasta County, California. Providing us with a wonderful historical building for many events and activites for our local area. It is always fun to visit and I'm usually not visiting but photographing the art deco motif.

The Cascade Theatre is one of those rare historical buildings that the City of Redding rather than demolish decided to save and restore. We have lost so many of these treasures that it is a celebration that one has been saved. The result is hard to describe. We simlply don't have the art deco splendor in this day and age.

This is the Cascade Theatre in the heart of the downtown area of Redding. We are walking back to the theatre after the Sundial Coctail Party.

This is one of the Art Deco Light Fixtures in the high ceiling of the auditorium I was facinated to see such beautiful detail everywhere I looked.

We are looking forward to the Sundial Film Festival again this coming March. I have a new camera and we'll do another study in Art Deco and the Cascade Theatre! I love it!

When Falling...Dive - Or as My Husband Likes to Say - Just Jump In and Get Wet!

These are my babies. Each and everyone built by yours truly. I like each and every one of them and I encourage you to step into the world of Development and build your own blog sites. Now, I've heard lately some pretty nasty things about the "AR Gods". I'd just like to say that first, I don't like that term and secondly, I just so disagree. They are magnanimous to a fault and just put out the best they can find as featured posts. You try reading all our posts everyday and finding the best for an extremely diverse group of people with many different levels of expertise.

This will not be a featured post because it is meant for those who are on the cusp and have already been thinking about doing this. It's not for the faint of heart and yet it yields great reward. So to that rather small group that's ready for an adventure, here's a post for you. These are my outside blogs and they produce for me the results to sustain my business.

I hate to tell you but there are even more blogs than are here. There's my outside blogs for three ActiveRain Accounts. I have my account, David has his account and we also have a Ranch and Land account. He's not had time to make the pillow photos yet. We also have an REO listing site that's new and a Western Properties and Land site that is also not represented here.

So buy "Wordpress for Dummies" and get started. I wanted David to build me an outside blog and he was busy with paying jobs (we don't say no to paying jobs) and so I started building them myself and I think I have a runaway train. Just kidding....I'm pretty done. I do have an idea for one more which will be built on Joomla and eventually be my main real estate website.

Should you install tile yourself? Installing tile in Westchester and Stamford.

Debbie Gartner brings us this excellent post on the issues with installing tile yourself. I had a client that installed his own tile and we ended up with 1/4" diagonal gap in the dining room. Had to disclose and that room made you feel dizzy. Debbie, thank you for this good work.

Should you install tile yourself? Tile is the one flooring surface that so many do-it-yourselfers think they can install themselves (or they have a friend who can do it). And, tile is also the one surface, moreso than any other surface, where I see such a wide spectrum of skills and some VERY messed up tile jobs, so this is a big watch-out.

Because tile is so labor expensive, it is the most expensive surface to install. And, because it’s more expensive, it’s one of the areas customers try to save on, especially these days. Sometimes these jobs are done by do-it-yourselfers, sometimes by handymen, sometimes by people who are handy. Regardless, this can sometimes lead to major issues, and personally I think it’s best to have a professional tile installer help you.

By far, the biggest issue is the one area inexperienced installers don’t see or don’t know about and that is floor prep. Your tile is only as good as the subfloor and the prep underneath it! If you haven’t done this correctly, it doesn’t matter how much you’ve saved on your labor or how good your tile laying skills are, or how great a deal you got on those tiles as they will surely crack.

What sorts of issues can happen?

Most common issue is cracking. And, this happens often – usually not right away, but sometimes 1-2 yrs later; sometimes 5-10 yrs later. Most common reasons for this are because someone installed on top of plywood or a wood surface and/or because floor is uneven. Floor prep and leveling is super important. If you don’t do it, you’ll be sorry. I can’t even tell you how many jobs we have seen where the tile is cracked, and it’s obvious to me why it’s happened – no floor prep. This is even more important in Northeast and mid-Atlantic areas where homes are older and tend be less level.

Uneven tile laying – you should always use spacers. I have seen many sloppy jobs – tile and grout lines uneven. I also see lots of sloppy cuts around the edges and the trim and missing transitions. It’s quite sad. Looks terrible no matter how nice the tile is.

Improper lay out and spacing. My installers measure and center. So whether it’s a floor or a bathroom wall or backsplash, we measure to see how the tile will lay out. We center it in the room so you don’t have ½ pieces on one side of the room or your design or border hitting the electrical outlets.

Grout lines that are too large – Ugh. Every time I see large grout lines, my nose starts to cringe as this looks so dated. But, so often, this is just done by someone inexperienced and not up-to-date on the trends. Thinner grout lines look nicer, last longer and are easier to clean and maintain.

Wrong or no trim pieces. When finishing off tile, especially in a bathroom, you need to have bullnose or wallnose pieces for smooth transition to the wall. Otherwise, it just looks unfinished and it’s obvious that it was done by an amateur.

I could go on about other issues, but I think this is enough for now. If you’re considering installing tile flooring in your bathroom or adding a tile floor in your kitchen, please consider calling a professional. There's something pounding at the door. I can hear it and it comes 'round often. I'm busy right now and I know it's knocking but I'll get that door when I can. I have so much to do and that knocking just won't go away. That North wind stirs up the knocking and it gets so loud. If I could only think and do without that knocking. Might as well open that door and let it in. Dang, it has a habit of bringing along new stuff and messing old stuff up. Just when I think I've got it all squared away...there it is again...that knocking. I've opened the door and now everything is a mess. I now have 20 more things to do and 16 things to change. How can this keep happening? Every time that knocking starts, my world goes into a rebirth of cosmic proportions.

It's better now after letting it in. There's no more knocking and the 20 more things to do are all in a list and the 16 things that need changing has begun. It's all quiet once again. Note to Self: Must remember to open that door and answer that knocking sooner.

Laurie Manny had so many friends in Southern California that we thought it would be nice to have a Memorial Celebration for Laurie in Long Beach. On Thursday September 9, 2010 from 5-8 pm there will be a celebration of her life at Parker's Light House on Shoreline Drive in Long Beach Ca.

This will be an opportunity for all of us who loved Laurie to share stories, hugs and lots of laughs as we remember our dear friend. Laurie loved Parker's Light House and we will be on the Patio overlooking the water and the shoreline where Laurie took so many fabulous photos.

We will be providing appetizers and there will be a no host bar. The dress is Beach Casual. We are requesting no cameras or blog posts. This is a special time for her family and friends to share their memories.

We have set up a Laurie Manny Memorial Fund for those who would like to make a donation.  I know there will be tons of flowers at her services in New York and we will be providing flowers in Long Beach so we thought that perhaps her friends might like to donate to a fund that will go to her family. Your donation will not be tax deductible as you are sending a gift to a friend.

We had thought we would be able to set it up with a national bank but the paperwork was more then seemed necessary. Marlene Bridges is at her home in Palm Springs this week and was kind enough to inquire at a local bank and set up the account there.

How's Your Brand? No We Are Not Talking About Your Breakfast Cereal!

With the development of the Social Networking world or Web 2.0, we've seen a change that has brought the power to brand down to the individual's level of capability. It is possible to brand and market ourselves and our businesses effectively in a new and powerful way. The playing field has been leveled and that in my humble opinion is a good thing.

Who needs to pay mega bucks to advertising and promotional companies to develop a brand. Years ago we couldn't and so we didn't. All that has now changed. It's really rather exciting to realize just how much power we have in the world of social networking. Let's look as some very strongly carved out brands that have been created by the individuals themselves.

"The Lovely Wife" (Broker Bryant's Wife) The One And Only TLW. (President-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc.)--One brand that comes to mind is a strong one. It is a brand like no other and the owner is very well known here in ActiveRain. It is all about a Lady that walks the talk. She's indelible and a woman of true spirit. She possess major smarts and will never hesitate to take you, the membership or the world, for that matter to task.

She encourages and inspires us all on many levels. Now the evolution of this brand goes back a long time and continues to evolve. It will require an investment on your part to learn about TLW and it will be well worth your time. I remember, thinking who is TLW and why would anyone want to call themselves "The Lovely Wife...ROAR". I'm not sure that even to this day, I can explain it. Paul Slaybaugh is another excellent blogger who's brand is unique. I will be honest that it is hard to adequately speak to your about the brand that Paul has built. It is not a contrived or market brand that we normally see. It's not that brand where someone contemplates what their brand is. For Paul, unlike many of us, his brand has evolved over time and become that of the highly developed level of perfection in writing abilities. Paul possesses the ability to take us out to a new place and to entertain us with his thoughts. He engages us in a world presented to us through such elegant detail. His work is beyond description and I can only encourage all to subscribe and read on a regular basis. Just the contemplation of Paul's thoughts open up the possibilities of changing how you see the world.

He shares with us the world of his private revelations and the beauty of his personal life. It's does not really seem right to call this level of genius a brand and so we won't. We'll just be content to say that we admire this beautiful work. It has changed who we are.

Welcome to beautiful Wrightsville Beach, NC! We're glad you're here and we hope that you'll be back. Again and again.

To that end, please be careful when you are swimming in the ocean. We've had a spate of very strong rip currents lately and they are predicting they will be much worse by the end of the week due to Hurricane Earl.

You can track Earl here. It's too early to know what impact he will have on our shores, he is expected to narrowly miss us. But we will still have to deal with some rough surf and rip currents.

Should you find yourself in a rip current please heed these tips:

Remain calm

Don't fight against the current

Swim out of the current in a direction following the the shoreline

Once out of the current swim at an angle away from the rip current towards the shore

Passage and Change - The Seasons are our Guide - Cycles of Life!

Being a Realtor is a passage. We begin a relationship with a phone call and through information, knowledge and guidance, we help our clients through a transaction to the culmination of a goal. Just as the Seasons come and go, we also experience a cycle and passage with our clients.

Spring is the Season of Rebirth when life is bright with the green of a new cycle of life. As a Realtor we know the Springtime essence of getting to know our client and learning about their goals. It is the beginning of a new and sweet time when we develop that relationship of trust and mutual respect. It is the beginning and it will be the most important time when we learn about each other.

Summer is the Season of Sustenance and of deep green when roots grow deep into the earth to anchor and quench the thirst for nourishment. Summer to the Realtor is that time when we work to provide the resources that will help our clients find and secure their real estate goals. Through the investment we make to research and markedly know the trending market conditions, we provide the basis for our client's success.

Fall is the Season of change when Nature can hear the call of time and is busy preparing for the coming of Winter. Fall for the Realtor is that time when the transaction is completed and the preparation made for the client to secure their new home.

Winter is the Season of quiet and when Nature grows dormant in preparation for the coming of Spring and a new cycle to occur. Winter for the Realtor is that time when you maintain the relationship with follow up care and continued service. It may be the sharing of events or just news of real estate.

And so the cycles of life are completed, year after year and the Realtor experiences the Seasons of Change on a perpetual basis. As we work with our clients, we experience a rare and wonderful opportunity to support our clients in the same way that Nature supports the life cycle. Life overall is wonderful in all it's glory and the passage of the Seasons are a celebration of life. Our work can also be a celebration as we help our clients through a transaction, we have the opportunity to set in motion a bond that will be a lasting relationship. Just as the cyclces of life are a rhythm of life so is the work of a Realtor.
